WASHINGTON— Today, House Veterans' Affairs Committee Ranking Member Mark Takano issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s Executive Order ending union rights for countless federal employees, including Veterans Affairs employees.
“The right to join a labor union and the right to collective bargaining are foundational American principles. This Executive Order, effectively outlawing unions and unilaterally striking down collective bargaining agreements under the guise of unexplained ‘national security’ reasons, is deeply disturbing. This guidance encourages VA to use unconstitutional methods to discipline and fire employees, something the first Trump administration already tried, with attempts the courts rebuked. These previous unconstitutional efforts cost taxpayers millions of dollars and did nothing to improve care or benefits for veterans, and Trump is trying the same thing again. Trump's Executive Order, made in service to Project 2025, contradicts VA officials' pledges to Congress to abide by collective bargaining agreements. We stand with the hardworking federal employee union members who serve our nation’s veterans,”?said Ranking Member Takano.
